Cunningham Tops at Prehen

Fabulous golfing conditions on Saturday led to remarkable scoring in the Stableford competition at City of Derry. No fewer than seven players carded 34 points to force a complicated tie-breaker for the minor placing while the evergreen Gerard Cunningham(17) ran out an easy winner on 37 points. Gerard plundered the Prehen front nine for a massive 24-point halfway total. A double-bogey on the tricky Par 5 7th, “Dermot’s” was his only mistake but a birdie three at the difficult Par 4 9th,’Daly’s” corrected the error in style. The addition of a further 13 points on the homeward journey, despite an uncharacteristic blank at the Par 4 11th, “Prehen”, ensured an easy victory.

Meantime seven players were battling for the minor places. Les Dickson, John O’Doherty, Mark Sheridan, Terry Quinn, Eric Watson, Jim O’Hagan and Michael Lynch all carded identical totals of 34 points for the competition holes. All but Jim O’Hagan and Michael Lynch were eliminated early in the tie-break calculations. Jim O’Hagan(18) secured second place on count-back. Jim’s twenty-three points on the outward nine included a four pointer for a superb birdie at the short Par 4 dog-leg, “The Gap” where so many players frequent the water and find their victory hopes washed downstream! Michael Lynch(15) didn’t give up easily in his fight for a prize. With twenty points for the front holes, including a birdie three at the little card-wrecker Par 4, “Swilken”, Michael was in a good position to build a great total. Michael added a further 14 points on the homeward journey but he will regret the error on thirteen that resulted in a double-bogey and surely cost him second spot. Still the signs are good and Michael has been marked as a man to watch in coming weeks!
