Rosborough and Clifford Triumph Over the Elements in JC Halliday and Sons Open.

The JC Halliday and Sons Open took centre stage on Sunday and, despite the blustery conditions which worsened markedly throughout the day, attracted a large turnout from members. Past Captain Mr John Rosborough(14) carded an impressive 38 points to take first place by a margin of two from his nearest competitor. Twenty-one/seventeen was the split in a steady performance that was admirable given the conditions. Second place went to big-hitting three-handicapper Mr James Mackay who also claimed the accolades for best gross of the day. Mr Mackay’s 73 shot total equated to 36 Stableford points and he took his overall second place on BOT by virtue of his superior back nine. Third spot was handed to hard-working and ever-present club secretary Mr Shane Kelly(16) who finished on 36 points but will rue a run of double-bogies over the back nine that surely cost him the top prize. Mr Brian’s McClelland(16) had to be content finishing in fourth spot despite his fine 36 points. When he reminisces about the day’s exploits Mr McClelland can point to Mr Kelly’s reputedly superb birdie three on the scenic Par 4 18th, “Journey’s End” as the moment when the BOT axe fell in the honorary secretary’s favour. Mr Tony McDermott took the front nine prize with 21 points and Mr Neil Duncan lifted the Back Nine prize with 23 points.

The performance of the day, however, came in the ladies’ competition where MS Marie Clifford(29) carded a fabulous 28 points to lift the prize. The remarkable performance was an example of the tenacity of the Prehen lady golfers who battled through the most foul of the conditions to complete the competition in torrential rain when most of their male counterparts sought refuge from the elements in the cosy clubhouse. Well done Marie!
