McDaid Triumph in Club Stableford

For Gary McDaid (16) it looked like another day when working in the office would have been preferable to golfing as he took a miserable double-bogey at the scenic Par 3 1st, “The Firs” but three pars and bogeys on the other holes allowed him to card 19 points on the opening nine to recover. A sudden burst of par golf at the start of the back nine was capped with a superb chip-in birdie at the stroke index 1, Par 4 401 metre 14th ,”Aintree” and the resulting extra 22 points allowed Mr McDaid to best his nearest challenger by a single point. That challenger was none other than 22-handicapper John Houston who carded 40 points to take second prize despite failing to record a score at the relatively easy Par 5, “Longfellow” when even a single mark would have given him first place due to his back nine 23 point tally. Alan Philson (9) claimed third prize when he carded 39 points for his 76 shot round that included fine birdies at eleven, twelve and sixteen. Ernie Heywood toured the course in a mere 71 shots to lift the gross prize for the countless occasion!

The Desmond’s Winter League got off to a flying start on Saturday with TEAM 3 (M.Doherty, J.Desmond, G.Mcdaid, P.Deans) recording 75 points to lead on the opening day. TEAM 16

(S.Kelly, J.Houston, E.Watson, D.McIvor) carded 75 points to lie in second place; TEAM 1

(A.O'Hara, J.Houlahan, N.O'Donnell, G.Cunningham) rose to the challenged to post 72 points for third spot; TEAM 10 (P. Logue,P.McAllister, J.O'Doherty, M.Doherty) combined their talents to claim fourth spot with 70 points and the last place on offer went to TEAM 13

(S.Orr, A.McFaul, T.McDermott,G.Curry) on 68 points(B.O.T). With ten weeks to run in this competition there is a feeling that it will be the one of the hardier teams to will eventually triumph as winter closes in!  Watch this space!!
