Porter Carries off Joe Ramsay Trophy!

In the most benign conditions for weeks City of Derry members played for the Joe Ramsay Trophy in this week’s Thursday Society. Sunny conditions and light winds made the event a pleasure to partake in and ensured hot scoring in a closely contest competition. Richard Porter(17) eventually won the event on a break-of-tie from the seemingly ever-present scoreboard resident Fred Young(7) as each player recorded 35 point totals. Richard played very steady golf throughout the day only appearing to be in trouble at the difficult Par 4 11th, “Prehen” and the par 4 18th, “Journey’s End” where he ran up double bogeys. Fred, needless to say,  played equally steady golf and even threw in a lovely birdie at the little card-wrecking Par 4 5th, “The Gap” where so many hopeful scores are consigned to a watery grave! But, in the final analysis the count-back worked in Richard’s favour and he carried off the trophy.

The break-of tie rules were again called into play to decide the final three prizes on offer when no fewer that  six players carded 34 pointers to stake a claim. Liam Flanagan, Ross Gamble, Robin McClay were quickly eliminated by the scorers with Gerard Cunningham(15) quickly establishing himself as the third prize recipient despite a horrible blank at the difficult par 4 11th, “Prehen”. Luckily, for Gerry, he demonstrated his renowned mental strength and a birdie at the par 4 13th, “Foyle” clinched his third place. Separating James Desmond(10) and Arthur O’Hara(11) proved the most difficult task of the day but James’ typical fighting five on the last hole of the day proved the deciding factor and he claimed fourth spot with Arthur forced to seek analytical assistance to explain the dropped shots without which he might have topped the prize list.
