Chambers’ Hardcore Performance

The weekend clubhouse discussion after Saturday’s Stableford competition at City of Derry was dominated by one topic – the hardcore performance of club stalwart John Chambers(8). John’s playing partners were in “awe” at the level of his play and are reported as observing that he appeared “to have the ball on a virtual string” as he peppered green after green with an apparently unending array of classy shots. Although he had a birdie putt at almost every hole he carded only four birdies as he amassed a massive 39 points for the fifteen holes of the competition. The result was, firstly, an easy win and, secondly, a warning to other members that this is a man whose game is on a solid foundation after the winter and he will be the one to beat this summer.

Three players carded distant 34 pointers to vie for the minor honours and a tie-break was needed to separate Ian Jarvis(14), Andy McFaul(7) and Gary McDaid(11). When Ian was eliminated it left a straight fight between Gary and Andy for the prizes and despite playing very steady golf it was Andy who had to be satisfied with third prize. The blank at the relatively easy Par 5 7th,”Dermot’s”, undoubtedly cost Andy dearly and he will mentally replay his mistake to ensure it never occurs again. Meantime, Gary McDaid played a very steady round in the benign conditions faltering only on the tricky Par 3 12th,”Billy’s” where he inspected the bunkers on both sides of the green before eventually holing out for a miserable five! However, a miracle long-range pitch and a stupendous putt on the last hole of the competition rescued his round and gave him second place on BOT.
