O’Donnell Abu in Thursday Open!

With the fairways bathed in unseasonal sunshine it was the old stagers who most enjoyed their day in the sun in this week’s edition of the Thursday Open at Prehen. Mr Noel O’Donnell (18) was on song with his 40 point total to claim first prize. A steady round that included only one double-bogey, at the long par 4 11th, ”Prehen”, yielded halves of 22 and 18 points for his winning score and a welcome handicap reduction to 17 for coming competitions. The other competition places required the deployment of the break-of-tie rules when three players carded 38 points apiece. The decision fell in favour of Mr Noel Kehoe (19) by virtue of a splendid 23 point back nine  that was steadiness itself. Mr Kehoe experience an unremarkable day over the opening holes and seemed to have scuppered his prize chances when he threw two double-bogeys and a blank into the mix but a closing nine of five bogeys and four pars yielded his 23 points and a long-awaited second place. Third spot was taken by Prehen’s oldest playing member, Mr Robert Whoriskey (17) who had yet another straight down the middle round of golf. Everything was on track for victory until the easy par 4 10th,”Spires”, where Mr Whoriskey failed to record a point – an error that surely cost him the competition. Despite fighting back with fine birdies at twelve and fifteen he could only muster 20 points on the back nine and has to be content with second third place. The third man on 38 points was Mr Liam Reddin(16) who narrowly lost out on BOT by virtue of Mr Whoriskey’s better back six.
