City of Derry’s Thursday Open Programme for 2016 kicked off this week and the first winner was fifteen handicapper Mr Alastair Duncan whose 41 points tally outpaced the field by some distance. A steady front nine of 20 points was followed by a par blitz over the closing nine for a further 21 points and an assured victory. Mr Connor McKnight took second place on 38 points but he will have sleepless nights haunted by  “what-might-have-beens and “what-ifs” given his failure to score at the easy sixth hole, “Swilken”, the deceptive par four 17th, “The Widows” and the bread and butter low-handicapper fodder that is “The Red Barn”. Normal service will, no doubt, be resumed next week for the big hitting ten-handicapper! Mr Fred Young was his usual steady self in taking third spot with a well-compiled 37 points and the ever-present Mr Ernie Heywood lifted the gross prize yet again with a credible 30 points.

The Thursday Opens continue with a visitor entry fee of just £15 pounds and times can be booked by phoning Sam Smallwoods on 02871 346369
