McClelland Takes Sunday Society Outing

William McClelland(13) and Richard Lavery(14) both carded 37 point totals in this week’s Sunday Society at Prehen. William carded 23 points for the front nine but could only muster 14 on the return journey as he mysteriously blanked the difficult Par 4 17th, “Red Barn”.  Richard meantime opened up with 24 points on the front nine and, for good measure, threw in a birdie three at the easy Par 4 6th, “Swilken”. Adding a further 13 over the closing holes resulted in his 37 point total. The B.O.T fell in favour of William and Richard will have to wait until next week for his maiden Sunday Society victory. Kevin Cassidy(16) took third spot with a finely compiled 36 points.

With three further prizes on offer the B.O.T rules where once again called into play as three player scored 34 point totals. Paul  Monaghan(16) mounted a typically battling performance for his 34 points. As the afternoon rain rolled across the course Paul inexplicably failed to score at the difficult Par 4 2nd, “The Valley” but as conditions worsened he knuckled down to the task and recorded superb back-to-back birdies at the 5th and sixth holes to rescue his round. Meantime the deadly duo of Malachy Armstrong (18) and Tony McCann(14) were fighting the conditions and the disappearance of the light as they compiled their 34 pointers. At home, with his feet up on his snuggling trusty mutt, Malachy will seethe about the shots dropped to par at two, eleven and seventeen, without which he would certainly have finished higher up the table. Tony will have no such regrets over his typically steady performance as he bested the conditions, if not the field, on this occasion! The B.O.T fell in favour of Malachy who took fourth spot, Paul who carried home the fifth prize and resulted in Tony being forced to shore up the other prize-winners this time.

The Sunday Society continues until April with lots of time for members to get involved.   In other news, members are alerted to a new development for our Junior Golf Section. It’s called the Junior Golf Passport Program will start on Saturday 4th March. The ten-week program aims to take children from age six to fourteen and guide their golf development from novice through to competition play. Full details can be had by contacting Head Professional Sam Smallwoods on 02871 311496.
