The Thursday Open programme continued this week and with a large field winning was always going to be a difficult job.  But, the weather was kind and any showers were what the Americans call “a soft Irish rain”! The problem for the early starters was that the showers were just a little too frequent! The after-work brigade certainly had the best of the conditions. Mr Stephen Orr(12) took full advantage of the easy going later in the day when he carded his 42 point winning score. A steady outward nine of 19 points belied the back nine fireworks that saw a 23-point tally recorded and that despite a failure to record a score at the tricky little 127 metre Par 3, “the Quarry”. However, with a birdie at the 17th and two finishing pars Mr Orr righted the ship and finished an easy winner by four points. Mr Martin Doherty (17) carded a 38 point tally to finish in second spot. His 19/19 split was steadiness personified but he will be rueing the putts that just slid by on so many holes. Mr Brian Mulgrew (20) showed that his game is getting back in shape as he lifted third prize with a hard fought 36 points. Mr Mulgrew won’t be smiling however as he contemplates the three holes where he recorded no score. One-handicapper Mr Ernie Heywood once again lifted the gross prize with a steady 30 points. Will no one challenge his seemingly dauntless ownership of the gross prize at City of Derry this season?
