Mr President’s Prize (Mr Maurice Quigg)

Jarvis Leads the Way in City of Derry President’s Prize.

Some 190 competitors took to the Prehen fairways on Saturday in beautiful calm conditions to take up the popular President Mr Maurice Quigg’s invitation to play for his Presidents’ Prize. Scoring was hot throughout the day but no one could match the sharpness of Mr Ian Jarvis (19) whose equal nines of 22 points provided the winning 44-point tally. A couple of double bogies on the opening holes did not bode well for Mr Jarvis but a neat birdie 3 on the tricky Par 4 5th, ‘The Gap”, made up the deficit and a further birdie on the difficult Par 3 15th, “The Quarry” added enough spice to take Mr Jarvis beyond the chasing pack.

Mr Jim McDaid(14) almost managed a challenge but just fell short on 42 points and had to be content with second place. A shot further back on 41 points was Mr Ronald Henderson(24) who claimed third spot but will be regretting his misfortune on the Par 4 11th, “Prehen” where any score would have seen him contend for the top prize. Big-hitting Mr Thomas O’Neill belied his eighteen handicap by compiling a neat 40 point total to claim 4th prize.

Mr Aaron Taylor(1) lifted the Gross Prize with 36 points, Mr Colin Jefferies and Mr Anthony Faulkner claimed Category 6-12 and Category 13-17 respectively on 38 points apiece, Mr Dennis O’Connell lifted the Category 18+ and Mr Terry Coyle was shocked to be eligible for the Veteran’s accolade when his 38 points was announced as the winning total. The young adult Prize went to Mr Gary Browne with 36 points and the best of the visitors was Mr Pat Mackey on 33 points. Mr Neil Duncan’s 21 points on the Front Nine assured him of that prize and hard-working Bar Convenor Mr Edwin Leonard was delighted to land the Back nine Prize with his 20 point score.

Earlier in the week the President’s Prize to the Ladies was played for and Ms Rosaleen McAnulla came out on top with 36 points, Ms Catherine McCanny finished second on 34 points and Ms Florence Walker took third place with here 31 points.

In his President’s address Mr Quigg welcomed his guests and members and thanked all those who helped him organise his competition and President’s Dinner, he complimented the Greens Staff, under the direction of Head Greens-keeper Connor McLaughlin, on the brilliant condition of the course and praised the chef team, under the direction of Head Chef Mr Gerry Doherty, on the high standard of the food provided to his guests. He concluded, having thanked his wife Carol for all her support throughout his two years in office, by wishing Club Captain Mr Clive Brolly good fortune in the weather stakes for his re-arranged Captain’s Prize on Saturday 23rd July.
