City of Derry’s Thursday Open Programme continued this week and in a well-supported contest eighteen-handicapper Mr David McIvor topped the table. David’s 37-point tally was more than enough to see off all opposition despite a somewhat ordinary front-nine performance. As Mr McIvor stood on the tenth tee with a mere twelve points in the book it seemed very much as though his day was not about to end in celebration.  However, a storming back nine of 25 points powered him to the head of the table. Six pars over the closing holes and a fine birdie three on the tricky Par 4 16th, “The Widows”, was the secret of Mr McIvor’s success. Mr John Monaghan (19) took second prize on the day but he will regret the small blemishes on his card at the difficult Par 4, “The Whins” and the card-wrecker that is the stroke index one, “Aintree”. Still, these omissions aside, Mr Monaghan is obviously set to improve over the coming season and will no doubt feature higher in the winners’ circle before too long. The steady Mr Alan Simpson carded 34 points off an eight handicap to take third spot and Mr Colin Jeffrey captured his first gross prize of the year with a well-compiled 34 points off a six handicap.

The Thursday Opens continue for the rest of the season and visitors can avail of a very reasonable competition price of £15 by phoning Head Professional Sam Smallwoods on 02871 346369.
