Tight Finish in Pairs Scramble

The Annual Pairs Scramble at Prehen was played in Sunday and, in football parlance, turned out to be a game of two halves! The first half was the beautiful calm conditions enjoyed by the early starters and the second half was that endured by those who opted to play later in the day when the wind strengthened and the rain cascaded from the leaden skies. The early pairing of Messrs Richard Hamilton(13) and David Spence(6) certainly got the best of the changeable conditions and, playing with a 4.8 handicap allowance, they toured the course in a mere 67 shots to record their winning 62.2 total.

Scramble allowances are a bit of a lottery, come on Camelot I’m sure you could make a money-spinning game from this(!), and Sunday was an example of the phenomenon! The pairing of Messrs Mark O’Doherty(6) and Thomas McBride(6) would have been a fair bet to take first place in this format but their allowance of 3.0 did them precious few favours. Playing in the worst of the conditions the pair battled gamely but, despite their 66 shots being the best gross of those recorded, they nevertheless were beaten by 0.8 and had to be content with second prize. Third spot went to Messrs Alaistair Duncan(15) and Jason Cleere(16) who finished on 63.2.
