Edwin Leonard(13) is the grateful recipient of the this year’s Thursday Society Ted Pope Trophy. A fine 32 points allowed Edwin to just edge out a hungry host of  players by a mere single point. The victory was certainly hard work as Edwin littered his card with no fewer than five single pointers and, but for a birdie on the carpet like green at the short Par 3 15th, “The Quarry”, he would surely have only adorned the lower rungs of the prize ladder! Competition Convenor Clive Brolly(9), Robert Whoriskey(13), David McIvor(10) Edward Mitchell(13) and Brian Mulgrew(15) did their level best to chase the winner down but all finished on 31 points and all failed by that single elusive shot. The B.O.T. machine went into overdrive to separate the minor prize-winners and the first to be eliminated was Clive Brolly. The renowned winter hotshot is perhaps finding the demands of competition convening weighing heavily on his hyper-developed golf swing!

Edward Mitchell took the fifth prize on offer after a steady performance where he kept the double-bogies down to a routine three. David McIvor pulled into fourth place on the break- of-tie despite failing to register a score at the difficult Par 4 stroke index 1, “Aintree”. However, it is obvious that David still has plenty of power in his engine as we approach the new season. Brian Mulgrew showed no sign of being tired as he compiled his 31 points and, but for an uncharacteristic seven, on the Par 4 4th, “The Whins”, he would surely have taken the top accolade.  Second place went to the City of Derry’s irrepressible 86-year-old Wunderkind Robert Whoriskey whose score of 31 included no fewer than four single pointers! Given Robert’s stellar winter performances the club handicapper must have his cutting committee calculating a suitable pre-season reward.
