Callen’s Magic!

When Thursday’s competitions were blown away by Storm Doris there were few who held out any prospect of weekend golf at Prehen as Storm Ewan was scheduled to roll over Derry bringing high winds and horrendous rain as a reminder that Spring is still some little distance away!

But golfers are a hard-headed bunch when denied dalliance with their sporting mistress and, despite the difficult conditions, many turned out to trod the Prehen fairways over the weekend. The eagerness of youth was to the fore as Prehen Junior Captain, Lewis Callen(12),  recorded his second victory in as many weeks. Playing in the worst of the torrents Lewis carded 26 points to win by a single shot from second placed Kris Dunn(12). Both players can be justifiably proud of their performances on the day. No so proud, however, will be Seamus Given and Jim O’Hagan. Recording 27 points for his game Seamus would have been forgiven for feeling quietly confident that he would carry home the top honours. Instead he suffered the ignominy of disqualification as the hawk-eyed Competition Convenor at Prehen noted that he had signed for Mr O’Hagan’s score and Mr O’Hagan had kindly reciprocated. Odds are being offered that next Saturday’s usual game will be a frosty affair punctuated by much more secure card-checking procedures and conducted wearing the latest fashion from Specsavers!
