Doherty Wins In Tight Finish.

The Thursday Open Series was played this week in fabulous golfing conditions. And, along with the sun, there arrived several excellent scores! A break of tie was needed to separate the first two players who both carded 41 points. The decision fell in favour off 12 handicap golfing dynamo Mr Stephen Doherty over the big-hitting, but prone to be erratic, five handicapper Mr Kevin Quigg.

Mr Quigg played the outward holes steadily enough, despite bogeying the first, and things brightened up when his drive and sand-wedge resulted in an eagle two at the easy par 4 6th, “Swilken. The resultant 21 points was a fair reward for front nine battling play. On the back nine Mr Quigg found only a single birdie, this time at the difficult Par 4 13th, “Foyle”, but he cancelled this one out by double-bogeying the relatively easy last hole. Still, a further 20 points had been amassed and the accolade of Best Gross was now also on his CV. Meantime, Mr Stephen Doherty(12) was playing the front nine pretty scrappily but a birdie at the easy par 4 6th, “Swilken” settled the nerves and he carded 19 points for the first nine. A steady back nine of 22 points meant that the BOT fell in his favour and he took home first prize.

The BOT rules came out again to separate the third and fourth place finishers. With three players on 40 points and only two prizes on offer someone was bound to be left out in the cold. On this occasion it was Mr Noel O’Connell (Jun).  21/19 was the split of his score but that split was matched by Mr Greg Hay(12). However, Mr Hay’s fine birdie three at the last hole ensured that it was he who collected fourth prize while Mr O’Connell was left to rail about the fickle nature of his continuing struggle with the tricky Par 4 16th, “The Widow’s” Mr Barry McCallion(18) found that his split of 20/20 gave him third spot on the day.
