Win for Edwin!

Saturday at Prehen presented as a typical winter’s day, windless but with a descending cold that urgently advised golfers to keep on the move lest they freeze to the spot! The weather may have been nippy but the golf game of Edwin Leonard(14) was certainly HOT! Edwin garnered 22 points on the front nine despite mysteriously blanking the easy Par 5 third hole, “Longfellow”. But, a par at the difficult fourth- where he avoided the out-of-bounds and the strategically placed ”whins” – followed by a birdie three at the tricky Par 4 5th, “The Gap”, rescued his front nine. The roller-coaster adventures of Leonard continued on the journey home where he totally blanked the 17th but rolled in a superb putt on the eighteenth for a birdie three! The end result was an interesting compiled 37-point winning total that was two points ahead of the nearest challenger.

Vying for second place were two players who carded 35-point totals. Edward Porter(12) had to be content with third place when the break-of-tie rules where called into play.  Edward amassed 21 points for the front nine and threw in a lovely birdie two at the tricky Par 3 12th, “Billy’s” but the double-bogey at the par 4 11th,”Prehen” ultimately cost him second place. That honour went to Gary “Chip-in” McDaid(11) who took the traditional route – driver, pitching wedge, forty-footer – to birdie the easy Par 4 sixth, “Swilken” and the stylish route – driver, three-metal, seventy yard chip-in – to birdie the difficult Par 4 13th, “Foyle”! All that action meant that Gary captured second place over the luckless Edward who will surely feature in reports in future weeks.
