Kings Reigns at Prehen!

The Captain’s Charity (Alzheimer's and Dementia) Open(L&G) was the competition on offer on Sunday at Prehen. Club members and visitors turned out in force to support Mr Clive Brolly’s efforts to raise funds for this very worthwhile charity.

As the sun set on a beautiful golfing day Mr Damian King(13) reigned supreme over all and sundry. His 41 points was an easy winner by a margin of two shots from nearest challenger Mr Richard Ayton(7). Birdies at seven, fifteen and sixteen were the deciding factor in this fine performance. Second place finisher, Mr Ayton, had no mean score with his return of 39 points that was a model of consistency and had the added spice of birdies at “Longfellow” and “Swilken”, two holes renowned as potential card-wreckers.  Mr Fred Young’s long practice sessions again paid dividends as the eight handicapper returned 37 points to claim third spot.

The best of the large turnout of visitors was Rockmount GC’s Mr Eamon McKinney(16), the best ladies’ score was that by fifteen handicapper Ms Geraldine Crossan with a fine 35 points, the second best of the ladies’ scores  was that by Ms Ann Wallace with a credible 27 points, Mr George Baldrick’s 22 points claimed the Back Nine prize and Mr Kevin Quigg’s matching score lifted the Front Nine prize. Yet again Mr Ernie Heywood claimed the Gross prize on the day. His 70 shots yielded 36 points and the second best gross of the weekend. At this point most of the Prehen golfing fraternity have conceded that it may not be possible to stop Mr Heywood’s seemingly inevitable march to victory in the Golfer of the Year Competition. With very few single competitions remaining Mr Heywood, on 383 points, has a commanding lead over Mr Graham Hepburn, on 377, and Mr Andy McFaul, on 374. The early promise of the young guns – Messrs Moore, Hasson and Hasson, McClelland, Duncan and Lindsay – have all faded into oblivion – leaving the experienced Mr Heywood within touching distance of recording yet another victory in this annual scorefest. But, has Mr Hepburn on last effort in him? Watch this space!
