Smith Edges Win in Hard Fought Nexus Open.

Any Charity Open is always well supported by City of Derry members and Saturday’s playing of the NEXUS Open was no exception. Sixteen handicapper Mr Conrad Smith posted 41 points to take the main prize for men while Ms Geraldine Crossan’s 33 points was the best of the ladies scores on a break-of tie. Mr Smith’s front nine of 18 points was steadiness itself and a back nine of 23 points secured the title by a single point from no fewer than five players who all carded 40 totals. Messrs Dean Nutt, Struart McClelland, Michael McDaid all lost out in the prize positions on break-of-tie and they all have stories of hardship to tell! The BOT axe fell in favour of Vice-Captain and hard-working Competitions Convenor Mr Michael Carroll who took second spot. His failure to notch a point up at the relatively easy Par 5 3rd, “Longfellow” will be relived but his 22 point back nine just edged the BOT in his favour. The amiable Mr Andrew McFeely was a welcome figure in third place with a round that showed he may well be about to go on a run of form in the August tournaments. As soon as his playing partners, Mr Brian Long and Mr John Barrett, respectively discover a putting stroke and that the course has fairways then they may well be a team to watch for the End of Season Teams of Four! Mr Graham Hepburn(6) landed the Gross prize with 35 points, Ms Ann Wallace took second place in the Ladies competition and Ms Louise Peoples took third spot with 33 points apiece.
