Battle Royal at Bishop’s Gate Am-AM!

The City of Derry two Day Am-AM is annually relished by members and visitors alike and with Derry’s newest luxury venue, The Bishop’s Gate Hotel, added as the competition’s 2016 sponsor anticipation and participation was at an all time high. Some fifty teams took to the Prehen fairways on Saturday to see if they could master the unique challenge of a pristine course coupled with a threatening weather pattern promising tough scoring conditions. The early starters had the best of the conditions on both days but as the showers worsened and the winds built the tough, as they say, got going! By the end of Saturday’s play the quartet of Messrs Kevin Barrett, Sean Coyle, Felix Healy and Eamon McCourt had shown some nifty footwork and were celebrating a performance of note that had left them on 92 points and holding a slender one-point lead over a posse of five teams who had broken the ninety-point barrier.

In second place on Saturday was the dangerous team of Messrs Sean Quigg, Lester Moore, Maurice Quigg and John Gallagher. After the failure of a team member to present on the course, using the excuse of the inclement weather, Mr President Quigg called upon the services of two-handicapper Mr Lester Moore as an urgent replacement. Local and international world political leaders could learn a thing or two from the astute Mr Quigg whose selection, having forfeited Sunday’s practice round for  “The North” on Royal Portrush to answer his President’s call, went on to fire no less than 7 birdies over the two day competition!

The vicious winds of Saturday abated a tad on Sunday but heavy slow-moving downpours and high humidity made playing conditions trying. It is always difficult to maintain a Saturday lead and, yet again, this proved the case for Messrs Barrett, Coyle, Healy and McCourt. Despite a battling 88 they fell away and could only finish in third place. Messrs Gary Leckey, Wyn Donnell, Thomas O'Neill and George Pearson proved themselves adept at the team game yet again when they added 89 points on day two to claim fourth place on a 177 total.

Messrs Messrs Quigg, Moore, President Quigg and Gallagher added a further 89 points to their Saturday total to finish on 180 but were relegated to second place on Break-of-Tie. The top place team was the quartet of Messrs David McIvor, Basil McIvor, David Curry and Gerry Browne whose Sunday total won the three way Break-of-tie.

The Day One prize went to Messrs Christopher Love, Trevor Heywood, Stephen Loughlin and Ian Jarvis on 91 points and the Day Two prize to Messrs Seamus McGee,  Liam Reddin, Jason Cleere and Alastair Duncan on 89 points. Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Paul Ferguson (Hole 1), Billy Acheson (Hole 8), Eamon Quigley( Hole 12) and Ian Dixon(Hole 15) Mrs Cheryl Chambers took the prize for the Ladies Longest Drive on Hole18.

At the Prize Ceremony Mr Captain Clive Brolly thanked Bishop’s Gate Hotel and General Manager Mr Ciaran O’Neill for their generous sponsorship for this year’s competition. In return Mr O’Neill, while looking forward to further co-operation with City of Derry, complimented the club on the splendid condition of the course and the test of golf that had been presented over the two days.
